CHOKED TO DEATH EATING A SAUSAGE
A 59-YEAR-OLD man who died at the breakfast table at Hill House Hospital, Minster, was choked to death eating a sausage, it was stated at an inquest at the hospital on Monday.
The East Kent Coroner (Mr. W. R. Mowll) recorded a verdict of "Death by misadventure" on Mr. Thomas Bushby Olliver, a patient at Hill House since January. His home was at 124, Grosvenor Place, Margate.
The Coroner said the medical evidence of Dr. L. B. Morris (consultant pathologist to the Thanet Hospital Group) stated that a large piece of unmasticated sausage was found in deceased's throat. It was estimated to be a quarter of the total length of a sausage. The cause of death was asphyxia due to the accidental inhalation of food.
Tried to save him
Alfred William Sutton, a charge male nurse at Hill House, said he was called by a male orderly to Olliver, who was choking at breakfast time on Wednesday last week. He found deceased sitting at a table in the dining hall and his face was blue.
Witness tried to remove an obstruction in his throat. He gave treatment, but deceased was unable to breathe and was unconscious. He died soon afterwards.
Witness said that deceased was "mentally poor" and gobbled his food. Some months ago he choked when he swallowed a piece of meat.
