Did You Know?

  • I haven't been able to find a burial for William Ilkince, who was stated to be deceased in a bond of October 1736, nor for Richard Mattox (which would make me more confident that the Mary Mattock who married John Newman in 1738 was Mary Barker). In fact, there don't seem to be any burials recorded in the Westbury parish register between the wife of Joseph Banks on 24th March 1734/5 and John Matravers on 10th May 1737.

WHEREAS by a Decree of the High Court of Chancery, bearing date the 17th day of December 1825, made in a cause wherein James Inglis and another are plainti?s, and Henry Smith and others are defendants, it was referred to James William Farrer, Esq, one of the Masters of the said Court, to inquire and state to the Court who was or were the heir or heirs at law of Eleanor Andrews, in the pleadings named, at the time of her death, and who are or is now such heirs or heir at law. - The heir or heirs at law of the said Eleanor Andrews, formerly Elkins, late Housekeeper to Samuel Yew, late of Leigh, in the Parish of Westbury, in the County of Wilts, Esq. deceased (who was the daughter of William Ilkince and Mary his wife, formerly Mary Ball, Spinster, was married to Richard Andrews, Widower, late of Amesbury, in the County of Wilts, on the 23d of November 1758, and was buried on the 5th of April 1769, at Westbury, in the County of Wilts), at the time of her death, and who are or is now such heirs or heir at law, are, on or before the 2d day of May next, to come in before the said Master, at his Cham- bers, in Southampton-Buildings, Chancery-Lane, London, and prove their heirship and make out their claims, or in de- fault thereof they will be peremptorily excluded the benefit of the said Decree.

Know all men by these Presents that Wee [sic] Mary Elkins of Ponly in the Parish of Westbury in the County of Wilts Spinster, John Mason of Westbury aforesaid Clothworker and John Baron of the City of New Sarum in the said County of Wilts Inholder are held and firmly bound unto the Reverend John Ealman Clerk Master (?) of Arts Official of the Reverend and Worshipfull Arthur Ashley Sykes Doctor in Divinity Chantor of the Cathedrall Church of Sarum in the sume of One Hundred pounds of Good and lawfull Money of Great Britain to be paid unto the said Officiall or his Successors or to his certain attorney his Executors Administrators or Assigns To which payment well and truly to be made Wee Oblige our Selves and each of us by herself and himself for the whole our and every of our Heirs Executors and Administrators firmly by these presents sealed with our seals dated the six and twentieth day of October in the Tenth Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the second by the Grace of God of Great Britain France and Ireland King Defendor of the Faith and so forth And in the year of our Lord One thousand seven hundred and Thirty six
The Condition of this Obligation is such that if the abovebounden Mary Elkins the lawfull daughter (Mary Elkins the Widow first renounceing in ^writing^ (?)) & Administratrix of all and singular the goods Chattells and credits of William Elkins late of Penly abovesaid Intestate Deceased do make or cause to be made a true and perfect Inventory of all and singular the Goods Chattells and Credits of the said deceased which have or shall come to the hands possession or knowledge of her the said Mary Elkins the daughter or into the hands and possession of any person or persons for her and the same so made do exhibit or cause to be Exhibited into the Registry of the Chantor of Sarum (if required) at or before the last day of January next ensuing and the same goods chattells and credits and all other the goods Chattells and credits of the said Deceased at the time of his death which at any time after shall come to the hands or possession of the said Mary Elkins the Daughter or into the hands and possession of any other person or persons for her do well and truly administer according to law And further do make or cause to be made a true and Just accompt of her said Administra tion at or before the last day of October 1737 (if required) and all the rest and residue of the said Goods Chattells and Credits which shall be found remaining upon the said Administrators accompt the same being first Examined and allowed of by the Judge or Judges for the time being of the said Court shall deliver and pay unto such person or persons respectively as the said Judge or Judges by his or their decree or sentence pursuant to the true intent and meaning of a late Act of Parliament made in the two and twentieth and three and twentieth years of the reign of our late Sovereign Lord King Charles the second (Intituled An Act for the better settling of Intestates Estates) shall limit and appoint And if it Shall hereafter appear that any last Will and Testament was made by the said deceased and the Executor or Executors therein named do exhibit the same into the said Court making request to have it allowed and approved accord ingly if the said Mary Elkins the daughter above bounden being thereunto required do render and deliver the said Letters of Administration (approbation of such Testament being first had and made) in the said Court then this Obligation to be Void or Else to remain in full force and Vertue
